The build-up to the Forum’s fundraiser at St Crux, at the end of the Shambles in York city centre, involved a huge amount of organisation as well as cake-baking, craft-making and scouring homes for pre-loved books and bric-à-brac, not to mention brand new unwanted presents. At last the big day dawned – Thursday 12 May 2016 – and many of the team were there from the off, 8am, to set up stalls, prepare and lay out food, and put out bunting and banners. For once, the gazebos over the stalls were needed for shade rather than shelter from the rain as the sun blazed down all morning and much of the afternoon.
The queue of customers started forming well over an hour before we were due to open at 10, and had swelled to 25 by the time we let them in. Others soon joined them, and before long the yard was full of bargain hunters sorting through trinkets, knick-knacks and old books.
Inside the former church there was a steady trade in refreshments. It was busier than we had anticipated and not once but twice an emergency dash to local shops was necessary to top up with items like sandwich fillings and fruit squash.
Many thanks to those who made the event possible, including those who donated goods, those who helped on the day and members of the public who supported the event by coming along. It was good fun, and turnout was undoubtedly boosted by the good weather. Takings on the day amounted to an incredible £1140 (£970 after expenses). This gives the Forum a big helping hand as we campaign for a fairer, just and sustainable trade system and promote the purchase and consumption of fairly traded products. Specifically, it has made it possible to print our new book, Fair’s Fair – Inspiring stories of Fair Trade champions from the 18th century to the present day.
