This year’s theme for Fairtrade Fortnight (29th February-13th March) is ‘Sit Down for Breakfast – Stand Up for Farmers’: as Martin Luther King said “Before you finish eating breakfast in the morning, you’ve depended on more than half the world”.
York Fair Trade Forum will be holding a Fairtrade breakfast on Tuesday 1 March at the Holgate Building, York St John University. Breakfast/Brunch-related Fairtrade homebaking will be available, along with Fairtrade tea and coffee. All welcome between 10am and 11:30am.
Fairer World Shop (84 Gillygate) will be showcasing four organic and Fairtrade ground coffees grown by women’s farmers’ co-ops in an event to coincide with York International Women’s Festival. Other Fairtrade drinks will also be served: 11am – 4pm Tuesday 8 March (free). On Friday 11 March 10am – 4pm traditional embroidery from women’s groups in India and Palestine will be on display and fair trade coffee and other drinks will be served. Most items will be for sale (free admission).
Shared Earth (1 Minster Yard) is offering a 20% discount on all jewellery, accessories and bags for Fair Trade Fortnight, including Mother’s Day on 6 March.
“Across the spectrum” fairly traded/fair trade gifts (stand on York Shambles market Fridays and most Sundays). Quote “Fair trade” during Fairtrade Fortnight and you’ll get 5% off all sales under £20 and 10% off all sales over £20.
Spurriergate Centre will have fairly traded tea, coffee or hot chocolate and a handmade Fairly Traded cake in this unique café during Fairtrade Fortnight. Many gifts, cards, Easter eggs and a variety of Fairtrade groceries and other products are available in their Fairtrade shop, some of which will be on special offer while stocks last during the fortnight.
Tea on the Green (The Green, Acomb) will have a wide range of Fairtrade chocolate for sale.
Explore cafes in York are offering 10% off Fairtrade drinks and food on 5, 6, 12 and 13 March.
And a bit further afield, if you’re visiting Malton on Saturday 5 March, there’s fairly traded goods available at the local craft fair, and all-day Fairtrade breakfast of cereals, toast with jam or marmalade and a drink for ONLY £2! (10am – 4pm)
