The 5th Annual Yorkshire Fairtrade Schools Conference took place on the 22nd March in the chapel at York St John University. After the opportunity to enjoy free Fairtrade drinks and cakes, and look round some stalls selling fairly traded products, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Alyson Tobin, opened the conference.
Various activities took place including a play performed by Cawood school and a presentation by Liz Roodhouse from Craven Development Education Centre about their Fairtrade Fortnight. Workshops were delivered to primary school pupils by Fair and Funky and the Centre for Global Education, and Bob Doherty talked to secondary schoolchildren, teachers and other adults about marketing and Divine chocolate.
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Sonja Crisp, presented the 2016 Fairtrade in Yorkshire School Awards and the 2015 Global Teachers Awards Level 1, as well as certificates for York Community Global Artist Project 2015-2016.
Sue Waller’s Brownie pack then gave an inspiring talk, sharing experiences of how they are working towards establishing a Fairtrade accreditation for Brownie Units.
Many thanks to the Centre for Global Education York who organised the event with support from York Fair Trade Forum, York St. John University, Comic Relief and Awards4All, as well as the workshop facilitators, Fair Trade retailers and the schools themselves. The refreshments raised over £67 for RAY (Refugees and Asylum-seekers York).
